Art on ice

Art on ice

snowflakes falling into deep dreams
winter’s cold unmercifully fading away
skater longing for Nijinsky’s music
empty the tribunes in the dark

and i shaped out of ice his heart
i drew the beats on the frozen ground
to see him skate with the moonlight
to hear the violins blessing the crowd

Evgeni Plushenko Nijunsky tribute 2004 – best performance.

You are probably wondering what does summer girl like me has to do with all this ice. Well, strangely enough, ice-skating is my favorite sport, I could never be a skater, brutally cold for me, but I can sit for hours and watch ice-shows. Evgeni Plushenko is my favorite man skater, I don’t think there has been a better one on the ice. I can very easily call him the King of ice and if you’ve seen the video you’ll probably agree with me. The jumps he does are hardly done by others, triple axel and combinations of triple, double, single jumps … the footwork, the artistic touch when he skates, so powerfully beautiful, I adore him. He is no longer active skater and watching the World Championship two weeks ago … without him, it wasn’t the same. So here this post is for Evgeni, for all the lovely art moments he gave to the crowd and me. 7 times champion of Russia,  5 times champion of Europe, 3 times World champion, Olympic champion in 2006 … well, I take a bow and continue to admire him with all my heart and soul.

P.S. It’s amazing to feel inspired again and to think about somebody else but Brian :)

Lovely poem for a greatly talented ice artist. So sad that he is no longer active in the sport. and Blaga, I did chuckle at your P.S–sometimes its even a relief to have your mind diverted.

  2. liv2write2day Says:

This is such a good representation through poetry of the art on ice, the music. Wonderful.

  3. yelena m. Says:

Blaga, this really touched my heart. I’ve been a figure skating fan since childhood, and Evgeny is also my favorite which is no wonder because clearly no one can be compared to him both in technique and emotion. Thank you for this moonlit dedication from Russia :)

  4. Jessica Says:

That’s a lovely tribute to your hero, Blaga.
Now, a video of YOU on the ice…???

    • Broken Sparkles Says:

hehe, Jessie, that’s some mission impossible … the only thing I can do on the ice is skate carefully in a straight line, and that’s no more than few minutes, cause after that I can’t move from the cold :)

  5. Tom Baker Says:

You have a way of casting people directly into your words Blaga. Wonderful poetry!

  6. Olivia Says:

Kinda agree with Baker! Lovely as always.. :)

Okay, lady!! This piece actually made me wanna skate on ice! As much as I love winters, I cannot skate for nuts!! :( Oh, but I sure can watch…and watch.. and watch people skate!! They look soooo graceful while skating.. (siiiigghhhhh)

And your poem evoked that same long sigh from me now…
A FABULOUS tribute to your favorite, summer gal… (and a great thing/person to think of too.. ;-))

Blaga! What a perfect poem. Absolute perfection. No dissonance! No jarring note. It is as utterly graceful a homage as the sport it honors when that sport is engaged in by a Plushenko. The gift of poem is truly yours. I will be back again to read this one.

Check your email. Sorry for my belated response. I’m not sure I was any help at all. Back online tonight. Have Publmonary Rehab today.

    Hugs!

A great poem to go with a great athlete and sport! I love figure skating too – I can’t skate at all, but I always enjoy watching someone else do it. It’s beautiful and graceful, and almost surreal.
